 1 January – Atlantic Charter is signed

 11 January – Japanese invade Timor, Celebes, and Dutch Borneo

 15 February – General Arthur Percival surrenders Singapore to the Japanese

 27 February – A large naval battle takes place in the Java Sea. Two Dutch cruisers, a Dutch destroyer, and a British destroyer are sunk.

 9 April – Bataan death march

 18 April – Doolitle raid on Japan. The first American air raid on Japan.

 2 – 8 May – Battle of the Coral Seal

 4 – 7 June – Battle of Midway

 15 June – An air and naval battle takes place at Pantelleria, in the Mediterranean

 20 June – The Afrikakorps and the Italian XX Corps assault Tobruk. Axis accepts General Klopper’s surrender the next day.

 1 July – First battle of El Alamein stops the Afrikacorps’s advance

 10 August – Operation Pedestal, the dispatch of a big supply convoy to Malta, began

 13 August – The German Sixth Army, under General Friedrich Paulus, assaults Stalingrad
